mission
The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Warszawie) marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of its new building on October 25, 2024. Designed by Thomas Phifer and Partners, the minimalist white concrete structure spans approximately 215,000 square feet, including 50,000 square feet dedicated to gallery space.
the approach
The museum's opening was met with overwhelming public interest, attracting around 50,000 visitors during its first weekend. The initial phase featured a series of events and exhibitions, including large-scale works by prominent women artists such as Magdalena Abakanowicz and Alina Szapocznikow. The full opening, showcasing the museum's permanent collection took place on February 21, 2025.
Beyond its exhibitions, the museum serves as a cultural center, offering educational programs, performances and community events. Its establishment not only fulfills a long-standing vision for a dedicated modern art institution in Warsaw, but also contributes to the revitalization of the city's urban landscape, reinforcing its status as a vibrant home for contemporary art and culture.

the outcome
The opening of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw marks a bold new chapter in the city’s cultural and architectural evolution. Strategically located on Plac Defilad, adjacent to the monumental Palace of Culture and Science, the museum reclaims a central and historically charged space for the public, transforming it into a symbol of openness, creativity, and civic renewal.
