mission
The Renzo Piano Pavilion, Kimbell Art Museum's most recent addition, is a masterclass in architectural sensitivity and innovation, meticulously calibrated to honour and enhance the design language of the original structure. The architects worked closely with preservation experts to ensure that the addition resonates with the museum’s historic character while introducing a contemporary edge.
the approach
Spanning 81,000 square feet, the pavilion nearly doubles the museum’s space. This enables the original Kahn building to focus exclusively on the museum’s permanent collection, while the new pavilion hosts major temporary exhibitions that support the institution’s growing curatorial ambitions.
In addition to gallery space, the pavilion includes a 298-seat auditorium designed to host concerts, lectures, and other cultural events. The expansion also houses classrooms, studios and an enlarged research library, reinforcing the museum’s educational mission. Further enhancing the visitor experience, the pavilion features amenities such as a café, gift shop, and underground parking, seamlessly integrated into the surrounding landscape.
